Prof. Wojciech Giertych OP
Prof. Wojciech Giertych OP is currently a Theologian in the Pontifical house.Though he was born in Poland, he lived for a many years in England.
In 1970, he went to Poznan, in eastern Poland, where he undertook historical studies at the University Adama Mickiewicz. After having finished his studies and defended his thesis, he entered in the novitiate of the Order of Dominicans. He received Holy Orders in 1981 in Krakow. Afterwards, he was transferred to Rome where he achieved a Doctorate in moral theology at the Pontifical University Angelicum.
He then returned to Poland and became the rector of seminarians in the Dominican convent of Krakow and teacher of moral theology.He taught at the Angelicum in Rome and at the philosophical-theological College of the Polish province of Dominicans in Krakow.
Since 1998, he has been a member of the general Council of the Order of Dominicans where he’s held various roles, most recently that of general associate for the intellectual life. Previously he was the general assistant for central and eastern Europe.
He speaks fluent English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Russian.
Between November and December 2005, he was nominated Theologian of the Pontifical House by Benedict XVI, thus substituting the Swiss Cardinal George Cottier.
